Advetec is working with Max Recycle to help decarbonise 3,000 businesses in the North East – reducing their carbon footprint and supporting the ever-growing corporate obligation to meet ESG goals.
Max Recycle is the first waste management company in England to convert waste into Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) using biotechnology on-site.
By introducing the process the innovative waste handler reduces the disposal cost and CO2 emissions.
Turning unrecyclable waste into SRF gives it greater value, benefitting the circular economy by providing an alternative to high carbon-emitting fossil fuels.
Max Recycle is the largest private collector of trade waste in North East England, North West England, Southern Lakeland and Southern Scotland. Its customer base is made up of businesses from the high street and regional industrial estates, including offices, retail and hospitality.
Max Recycle’s comprehensive range of waste management solutions is tailored to customers’ waste streams and the handler collects and disposes of general commercial waste, food waste and dry mixed recycling.

There are a range of costs and environmental impacts, that are associated with waste management and pressures on the waste management companies and operators is mounting.
With the Government’s plan to halve the amount of residual waste sent to landfill or incineration by 2042, waste companies such as Max Recycle must embrace all the solutions available.
The current challenging climate provides a catalyst for wider adoption of technology and an opportunity for waste contractors and their customers to regain a sense of control, both in terms of cost and carbon emissions.
As customers, FMs, strive to reduce their carbon footprint and improve overall green credentials, waste handlers need to support them in a transparent and responsible way.
The brief was to halve the mass of trade waste turning it into Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) that can be disposed of at a lower rate in a nearby facility. This significantly reduces the operational cost not only today but ensures financial stability over the next years to come.
Sustainability is at the heart of this project, decarbonising waste from over 3,000 local businesses. The output from the XO22 at Houghton -le-Spring will replace coal at a cement kiln contributing to the circular economy and reducing carbon emissions.
We work closely with the Max Recycle team to ensure the system fits into their operational model. The XO system operates almost autonomously, requiring little interaction from the operatives. Implementation of traffic light signals, count-down screens and special H&S measures should improve site’s efficiency. The training programme is tailored to the site so we can achieve quick adoption of the technology.
We are able to remotely monitor the performance and the outputs of the equipment to ensure the most efficient operation possible as well as carrying out safety checks, service requirements and monitoring gas levels.
Data will be collected and evaluated on a daily basis. By using a weighing system we are able to calculate the amounts and types of waste put into the machine and assess the level of waste reduction made. These figures fluctuate according to the activity levels across the site and the waste stream and amounts inputted into the machine.
The independent waste characterisation test results showed predicted waste mass reduction of over 50% which represents a significant decarbonisation and saving.
The ability to turn waste into SRF on-site is a huge leap in our journey to a more sustainable future for both us and our customers – and there’s never been a better time to make such an innovative move.
