Go 4 Greener transforms offensive washroom waste into Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF)

Advetec is helping Go 4 Greener to become the first waste management company to convert offensive washroom waste into a coal replacement product known as Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF).

Each year, the business will utilise innovative biotechnology to transform approximately 4,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste into SRF, rather than sending it to landfill or incineration.

By introducing the process the disposal cost is significantly reduced along with the CO2 emissions.

This move makes Go 4 Greener get closer to circular economy.

Our Customer

Award-winning Derby-based Go 4 Greener will become the first to process washroom waste with pioneering waste management technology. The commercial waste management and recycling organisation specialises in providing complete, independent waste solutions to businesses throughout the East Midlands and the rest of the UK.

Recently crowned East Midlands’ best commercial waste management company at the Environmental Sustainability Awards, Winners of Recycling Excellence and shortlisted for two other categories at MRW’s National Recycling Awards – Go4Greener is committed to recycling and disposing of waste in the most sustainable ways possible.

As part of this commitment, the company has signed an eight-year contract with biotechnology business Advetec to convert offensive washroom waste into Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF), supporting its bid to send zero waste to landfill, transition to a circular economy and help customers with their ESG goals.

Each year, Go 4 Greener will process up to 4,000 tonnes of offensive washroom waste, which includes hand towels, nappies and sanitary products, with Advetec’s largest aerobic biodigester, the XO22. The X022 will operate on-site at Go 4 Greener’s facility in Derby.

Objectives

  • Reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and incineration
  • Reduce and stabilise the operational costs
  • Reduce the offtake cost and future-proof the business
  • Support customers ESG strategy and Net Zero goals
  • Minimise the number of journeys required for disposal - reducing the associated road-related carbon
  • Turn unrecyclable waste into a commodity and support the transition to the circular economy

Implementing and commissioning

Go 4 Greener is constantly seeking ways to accelerate the journey to Net Zero and support its customers in doing the same. Historically, the high moisture content of offensive washroom waste has left the business with no choice but to dispose of this waste via landfill or EfW incineration.

The process digests the organic fraction of the waste using unique blends of naturally occurring bacteria and stabilises the waste. The floc that’s left will be used as a coal replacement product – each tonne of floc used as SRF will replace 0.5 tonnes of carbon-emitting coal.

The technology will turn waste once destined for landfill or incineration into nearly 2,000 tonnes of high-quality Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) each year – saving 1,000 tonnes of coal and 1,636 of CO2e per year.

This commitment to innovation enables Go 4 Greener to offer carbon reductions and greater cost certainty and assist with Scope 3 carbon emissions reporting for their FM customers in the hospitality, retail, commercial, and education sectors.

As customers, FMs, strive to reduce their carbon footprint and improve overall green credentials, waste operators need to support them in a transparent and responsible way.

We collaborate closely with the Go 4 Greener team to ensure the system integrates seamlessly into their operational model. The XO system operates almost autonomously, necessitating minimal interaction from the operatives. The implementation of traffic light signals, countdown screens, bulk loaders, and special health and safety measures should enhance the site's efficiency. The training programme is customised to the site to facilitate swift adoption of the technology.

We are able to remotely monitor the performance and the outputs of the equipment to ensure the most efficient operation possible as well as carrying out safety checks, service requirements and monitoring gas levels.

Result

Data will be collected and evaluated on a daily basis. By using a weighing system we are able to calculate the amounts and types of waste put into the machine and assess the level of waste reduction made. These figures fluctuate according to the activity levels across the site and the waste stream and amounts inputted into the machine.

The independent waste characterisation test results showed predicted waste mass reduction of over 51.9% which represents a significant decarbonisation and saving.
