First NHS Trust to process waste on-site
Advetec is working with Sodexo to help decarbonise a large NHS Trust – reducing their carbon footprint and supporting their journey to Net Zero.
The NHS Trust is the first to process waste on-site, converting waste into Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) using biotechnology.
Turning unrecyclable waste into SRF gives it greater value, benefitting the circular economy by providing an alternative to high carbon-emitting fossil fuels.
Our Customer
Sodexo Facilities Management Services who works with the Trust has signed a 10 year contract with Advetec, as part of a six - figure investment which includes a new purpose - built on-site waste - handling facility.
The deal will allow more than 2,300 tonnes of mixed residual, clinical and offensive waste to be processed on - site each year with the help of Advetec’s specialist ‘waste eating’ technology.
Using waste to create SRF will reduce the Trust’s disposal costs compared with conventional ways and benefit the circular economy, as SRF can be used in place of coal. As Advetec’s technology reduces the mass and volume of waste by 50% and 70% respectively, it will also reduce waste collections by two thirds and the associated carbon emissions of that waste by 80% - both of which are crucial to the Trust’s journey to Net Zero.
Objectives
- Reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and incineration
- Reduce and stabilise the waste management cost over the coming years
- Make a headway to hit Net Zero targets
- Reduce the number of bins on premises, creating a tidier working environment for busy staff to work in
- Benefit staff and local community by reducing the amount of waste wagons on roads, removing bad smells and negative effects on local ecology

Result
Data will be collected and evaluated on a daily basis. By using a weighing system we are able to calculate the amounts and types of waste put into the machine and assess the level of waste reduction made. These figures fluctuate according to the activity levels across the site and the waste stream and amounts inputted into the machine.
The independent waste characterisation test results showed predicted waste mass reduction of over 50% which represents a significant decarbonisation and saving.

Mass reduction

It allows us to take charge of our waste and dramatically reduce its mass and volume right here , on-site – which in turn takes rubbish wagons off local roads and improves road safety and air quality too. Right now we have at least one waste collection each day for our three major waste streams ( Recycling, Clinical and Mixed Residual Waste) . With Advetec’s technology, we will reduce collections to just one or two per week.
