Sobering News – What Earth Overshoot Day Being 8 Days Earlier Tells Us

Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services surpasses what the planet Earth can regenerate in a year. In 2025, this date occurs 8 days earlier than in 2024 — a notable shift that should serve as a wake-up call for us all.

A warning to us all

According to the Global Footprint Network, the move of Earth Overshoot Day to July 24 in 2025 reflects a revision in how we account for our impact on the planet.

The organisation comments: “One major revision this year was a downward adjustment of the ocean’s carbon sequestration capacity. This, along with a slightly higher per capita Footprint and slightly lower per capita biocapacity, shifted Earth Overshoot Day eight days earlier than in 2024. Seven of these eight days are due to the data revisions”.

Updated data on forest carbon sequestration has adjusted the figures, but even with this more accurate insight, the situation has worsened.

We are consuming more than 1.7 Earths’ worth of resources every year.

This means that for more than five months of the year, we borrow from the planet’s future and accelerate ecological degradation. Every day after July 25 is a day we remain in environmental debt.
