A perfect storm

Two forces are set to make the status quo untenable. The Scottish ban on biodegradable waste sent to landfill is set to take effect in 2028, with England expected to follow, and the inclusion of Energy from Waste (EfW) in the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is set to significantly increase disposal costs. Together, they create a waste crunch that could catch unprepared waste handlers and producers off guard.

Without leverage or alternatives in place, operators with lower waste tonnages risk paying high spot EfW prices, which will squeeze margins and likely force cost increases on commercial customers. Many others will have high volumes of waste to dispose of, and only expensive routes will be available.

To avoid a waste crunch that narrows options and triggers unavoidable cost hikes, waste handlers must explore and secure alternatives quickly.

Waste that is wet, heavy, and rich in biodegradable material and plastics presents a particular disposal challenge. For food manufacturers and processors, Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plants, and waste handlers processing offensive washroom waste streams, this is a business-critical issue.

Tackling the waste crunch with biology

Biotechnology is fundamentally changing how hard-to-handle waste streams are managed in the UK.Using the power of bio-stimulants and bacteria in a carefully regulated, temperature-controlled environment, biotechnology makes previously difficult waste streams more manageable, compliant and commercially viable by breaking down organic matter at a molecular level.

  1. Reducing volume and weight. Wet waste is heavy waste, and heavy waste is expensive to move. Biotechnology dries waste during processing, reducing its mass by up to half and stabilising it. In turn, this means fewer vehicle movements, lower haulage costs, and a smaller transport-related carbon footprint, plus a waste stream that does not smell or produce more Green House Gas emissions (GHG).
  2. Stabilising waste to meet landfill compliance. In Scotland, under the new biodegradable ban rules, only stable waste that complies with AT4 rules can be sent to a landfill. The biotechnology process stabilises organic matter in waste which means it is no longer degrading and producing GHG, and meets the required AT4 threshold so landfill will still be a viable offtake if required. This means that waste from our biotechnology can be sent to a landfill at a lower tax rate. In Scotland, it keeps landfill available as an offtake route.
  3. Creating pathways to alternative fuel production. Rather than paying to dispose of waste, handlers can use the biotechnology output we call floc as feedstock for producing alternative fuels. What was once merely a cost, becomes a commodity and starts a shift in how waste is valued.
  4. Presenting new possibilities. Washroom waste has a high plastic content but has always had limited treatment options due to its contaminating nature. When organic matter is processed, the resulting floc can be recycled, extracting greater value from existing resources.
  5. Giving new life to AD rejects. De-packaging food lines generate unavoidable waste, but biotechnology reduces AD plant reject mass by 60%, cutting disposal costs, and unlocking environmental value from materials previously destined for landfill or low-level incineration.
  6. Improving offtake reliability. Biotechnology opens up a new network of reliable offtakers, ensuring there’s a guaranteed market for waste once deemed worthless.
  7. Protecting the environment and improving green credentials. When hard-to-handle waste becomes a coal alternative, it helps to protect the environment and moves the country closer to its Net Zero goals. For every 10 tonnes of waste converted into alternative fuel, 6 tonnes of CO2e are saved, no methane is emitted, and 2.5 tonnes of coal are saved from being burned.
