EfW Costs Are Only Going Up: Innovate Now To Protect Your Business

News that Energy from Waste (EfW) gate fees will rise significantly once the UK enters the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) presents another major challenge for waste handlers – and a compelling reason to join our Virtual Waste Summit next month.

A new SUEZ-commissioned report predicts EfW costs will increase by around £48 per tonne by 2028 once facilities are brought into the ETS. With capacity already tight in many regions and local authorities consuming most of the available allowances, the price hike underlines an urgent commercial need for operators to move away from traditional disposal routes.

The message is clear: diversify now or risk being left behind.

These pressures – and the solutions available – are at the heart of our Virtual Waste Summit, held in partnership with Let’s Recycle. Under the theme ‘Unlocking Value from Unrecyclable Waste’, the event will explore how emerging alternatives like biotechnology can stabilise costs, cut carbon, and meet growing customer demand for more responsible disposal options. It will have a particular focus on tackling more challenging waste streams such as organic fines, washroom waste and mixed residuals.

The two-hour summit will look at how to recover value from unrecyclable waste, reduce dependency on low-level incineration and landfill, and futureproof operations. It will feature a keynote speech from Charlotte Rule, Head of Climate and Energy Policy at the Environmental Services Association (ESA), plus a panel discussion chaired by our Strategic Development Officer Dr Stephen Wise, with expert insights from Peter Vinall (Sustane Technologies) and Chris Wilson (Mura Technology).
